Rev. Ike\u2019s<\/strong> opulent lifestyle — he was given at one point to wearing a gold watch, a silver-and-diamond tie pin, a silver bracelet and a large gold ring studded with more than a dozen diamonds — was supported by millions of dollars in contributions to his church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am the first black man in America to preach positive self-image psychology to the black masses within a church setting,\u201d he told The Times in 1976.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is not the love of money that is the root of all evil,\u201d Rev. Ike liked to tell his followers. \u201cIt\u2019s the lack of money.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That year, his church owned 16 Rolls-Royces for his use, as well as an undisclosed number of Mercedes-Benzes, Bentleys and other cars. (As he once put it, \u201cMy garages runneth over.\u201d)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There were six church-owned residences for Rev. Ike, who at the time spent much of the winter in Southern California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe best thing you can do for the poor,\u201d he would say, \u201cis not be one of them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
